notification of all information.

Florida Universities
|
1999-2000
|
Procedures for requesting transcripts and mailing
college or scholarship applications:
On September 11, counselors will visit English classes.
Lists will be passed around for students to choose to which
colleges within the State of Florida University System they will
apply. Those
transcripts will be sent electronically before the end of
September. Students can request transcripts to be sent
electronically anytime during the year. PLEASE NOTE: STANTON
WILL SEND THE TRANSCRIPT BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU HAVE
APPLIED. YOU MUST COMPLETE AN APPLICATION FOR EVERY COLLEGE THAT
YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING.
There are a number of ways of applying to colleges,
both the Florida Colleges and most other colleges. Some of the
ways of applying to colleges:
1.
Use the computers in the Guidance Office or in the Media
Center to access the World Wide Web (WWW), go to the college’s
home page, and complete the application on-line. This is the
preferred method for most colleges. The computers in the
Guidance Office are bookmarked with the web pages for the State
Universities applications, or these sites are linked from Mr.
Turba's Cyber Guidance Office at http://www.jacksonville.net/~bobturba
Any student using this method must have a list of his/her
activities, and the following numbers of parent/guardian who is
claiming residency in Florida: 1) the date parent began
establishing Florida Residency; 2) parent’s voter registration
state, number, county, and issue date; 3) parent’s driver
license state, number, and issue date; 4) parent’s vehicle
registration state, tag number, and issue date.
2.
After the Florida colleges receive the transcripts
electronically, they will send a short application to the
student. This application can be completed and sent along with a
check for the application fee.
A longer version of this application is available in the
guidance office. Or the students can apply through the WWW. Using any of these
methods, students will need a copy of their senior schedule with
course names and course numbers.
It will not be possible to run copies of every student’s
schedule, so please hold onto the schedule that you received at
orientation. When
completing these applications, students will also need Florida
residency information for both them (the student) and the
claimant (who is usually a parent or guardian). The residency
information needed is the date the claimant began establishing
legal Florida residence and domicile, and the number and issue
dates of the: claimant’s voter registration, driver license,
and vehicle registration.
3.
The Guidance Office will have a supply of Common
Applications available. These
applications are used (without prejudice) by many private
colleges. With the common application, a student only has to
complete the required information once and make copies for any
other college that is on the list of those accepting the common
application. This is available in two formats: the paper copy
and on computer disk. Students
may bring into the guidance office 1 formatted high density disk
to obtain a copy of the common application on disk or it can be
downloaded from www.nassp.org.
4.
Students can mail away directly to the private or out of
state colleges for applications. This should be done as soon as
possible. Phoning the admissions office is a faster way to
receive the application.
|
|
Florida Universities - Applications
|
1999-2000
|
Dual Enrollment courses that
you are taking here at Stanton should be entered on the state
application. Enter the course name as "FCCJ Dual Enrollment
Anatomy and Physiology, taken at Stanton" In this way the
admissions office will not consider you a transfer student.
Anatomy and Physiology is 6 college credits, Humanities, if you
take it for the entire term, is 6 credits. Generally, a 1/2 credit
high school course is worth 3 college credits, a 1 credit high
school course is worth 6 college credits. See your counselor if
you have any other Dual Enrollment questions.

|
Florida Universities:
|
1999-2000
|
A list will be passed around
senior English classes where students will check off the
college(s) within the Florida State University System to which
they intend to apply. Based on those lists, we will
electronically send transcripts to those schools. Students must
complete the application process in one of the following ways:
1) when the school receives your electronic transcript it will
send you a short application that you must complete and enclose
a $20 check. Using this method you will have to complete an
application for each school to which you are applying; or 2)
most of the Florida prefer that students use the on-line
electronic application. The computers in the Guidance Office are
bookmarked with the web pages for the State Universities
applications, or these sites are linked from Mr. Turba's Cyber
Guidance Office at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/9893
Any student using this method must have a list of his/her
activities, and the following numbers of parent/guardian who is
claiming residency in Florida: 1) the date parent began
establishing Florida Residency; 2) parent’s voter registration
state, number, county, and issue date; 3) parent’s driver
license state, number, and issue date; 4) parent’s vehicle
registration state, tag number, and issue date.
See your counselor for more
information on any of these application processes.

Private Colleges
|
1999-2000
|
Many private colleges are
now requiring applicants to demonstrate a significant interest
in their colleges. At times, this is not clearly evident in
their instructions. Some
suggestions from our experience:
visit the college and talk with admission personnell;
attend local functions sponsored by the college, i.e., college
nights at local hotels and visits to Stanton; email the various
offices at the college including possibly students majoring in
your field of interest; visit the college's web site and view
all directions for applying.
You will be able to make your decision easier if you do
these things, and you will increase your chances of being
admitted.

Scholarship Scams
|
1999-2000
|
The Federal Trade Commission cautions students to look
and listen for these tell-tale lines from companies promising
scholarships:
"The scholarship is guaranteed or your money
back."
"You can't get this information anywhere
else."
"I just need your credit card or bank account
number to hold this scholarship."
"We'll do all the work."
"The scholarship will cost some money."
"You've been selected" by a 'national
foundation' to receive a scholarship - or "You’re a
finalist" in a contest you never entered.
Remember the following:
If you must pay money to get money, it might be a scam.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Spend the time, not the money.
Never invest more than a postage stamp to get
information about scholarships.
Nobody can guarantee that you'll win a scholarship.
If you're suspicious of an offer, it's usually with
good reason.
Check with your counselor or at http://www.finaid.org for more
information.

Senioritus
|
1999-2000
|
Do you think
you have it? The
following are examples of letters that students have received
from the colleges where they have been accepted that address
senior grades:
We have
received your final transcript and are writing to express our
disappointment with your progress during the second semester of
your senior year. As you will recall, your letter of acceptance
stated that you were admitted to First Choice University on the
condition that you maintain the same level of performance
throughout the remainder of your high school career.
Unfortunately,
you did not live up to the terms of your acceptance.
We regret to
inform you that:
1. We have decided to
withdraw your admission to First Choice University. Please make
arrangements to attend another institution. If you are able to
demonstrate more responsible behavior during your tenure at
another institution, we will reconsider your application for a
future year.
or:
2. We have decided to alter
the financial aid package you were offered by reducing the
amount of grant aid (which was based on merit) and increasing the
amount of work study and loans.
or:
3. We have decided to
require you to attend a seminar for at-risk students during your
freshman year. Attendance
is mandatory.
or:
4. We have decided to limit
the number of courses you may
take during the first semester of your freshman year. You may only enroll in
three, rather than four. This
may affect the number of years it takes you to complete the
requirements for a bachelor's degree unless you make up work by
attending summer session.
or:
5. Because of your drop
from a B to a D in Course X,
we have decided to place you in a remedial English (or
math) course for the first semester.
or:
6. Because we are concerned
about your level of maturity, we have decided
to house you
in Dorm X rather than the dormitory of your choice. Dorm X is
more carefully
supervised and study conditions are strictly enforced.

SENIORS: College Information.
|
1998-99
|
Be certain to notify all of the colleges from which you
received a decision concerning your admission. If you were
accepted by a college and will attend that college, be sure to
send any required deposits in order to secure your position and
housing. For all other colleges that offered you admission, send
a letter to them stating that you respectfully decline their
offers. This is important for all other Stanton students who
will apply to these colleges, and to other students on waiting
lists.
|
|
SENIORS: SAT I and II
and ACT Score Reports:
|
1999-2000
|
Scores are not sent with your transcript, either
electronically or through the mail. It is the student’s
responsibility to send the scores in order to meet all
deadlines. In order to assure that your scores reach your college(s)
in a timely fashion, you must send them directly from the
testing service to the college. For the SAT I or SAT II exams,
you can do this in a number of ways: 1) indicate your 4 free
choices on the registration form when you are registering for
the test; 2) use an ”Additional Report Request Form” - these
are available in the guidance office and the fee is $6.50 per
score sent; 3) Use telephone services - $10.00 for the service
plus $6.50 per score sent (1-800-728-7267); 4) on-line at
http://www.collegeboard.org. For the ACT exam, you can: 1) send
the scores to 3 schools free when you register; 2) use an “Additional
Score Report” form that is available in the guidance office.
Fee is $7.00 per score; 3) use the Telephone Express Service -
fee is $10.00 plus $10.00 for each score report. In the past, Florida
residents have been able to rely on a test score gathering
center in Tampa, but this service is not as reliable as the
direct score report method. Students are encouraged to use the
free reports when registering for the exams. When requesting the
scores to be sent, you must indicate the institutional code
numbers of the colleges or scholarships. The codes are available
in the test registration bulletin.
|
|
SENIORS: Transcript Requests
|
1999-2000
|
Transcript Requests for colleges and scholarships will
be handled in the following manner. The student will complete a
form similar to the following and see his/her counselor
regarding it. In most instances, the transcript should be mailed
by Stanton, not by the student. For all questions, please have
the students see the counselor.
